Student employment service

A Slivers-of-Time marketplace can be an immediate business-in-a-box solution for an SES based on the jobshop model that wants to turn into a profit centre. It can allow students to work exactly as they require while improving their employability.

"I love the idea of inputting my availability and getting work, it means I don't have to call agencies asking for work. It's always been hard to find work around my studying".

At the moment, students typically have one, maybe two part-time jobs with reasonably predictable hours. A Slivers-of-Time marketplace endorsed by their SES allows them to:

  • Specify all the potential hours they might be willing to sell their time this week, next week or the week after. They can work around an existing part-time job if the need is just for a few extra hours.
  • Specify all the potential hours they might be willing to sell their time this week, next week or the week after. They can work around an existing part-time job if the need is just for a few extra hours.
  • Cap the hours that are actually sold: "I mustn't work more than 12 hours this week", for example. This can be enforced by their agency/SES.
  • Work for a constant variety of employers, that quickly builds a depth of experience and flexibility. Proof of it can be printed out for job interviews to show reliability and flexibility.

These marketplaces require an agency. An SES can achieve that in one of three ways:
  • Inviting a local agency to fulfill that function, possibly with some percentage of revenue generated by students through the Slivers-of-Time market being paid back to the SES in return for vetting of students.
  • Setting up a formal joint venture based on profit share with a local agency where the service is branded as the SES but actually run by agency staff.
  • Launching as an agency, possibly with key functions such as payrolling/invoicing outsourced. We can provide further information on outsourcing agency functions.

Either way, the SES can set a mark-up on each transaction that accrues to their bottom line. It allows internal departments to be served at one rate, external companies at another. SES staff are freed from arranging interviews or bookings and able to focus on developing the working experience of their clients.

"I couldn’t believe it, I was working just after registering with the agency. I always wanted to be in control of my work. Looks like Slivers is the way to do it".
